Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my own horse for training with you?
You can bring your own horse for any of our services; you must provide a current negative Coggins report to bring your horse(s) on the property. We can also provide teaching horses for you to learn on, and can help you find a good match to buy or adopt a horse of your own.
Do I need to have special equipment to train with JW Horsemanship?
You will need to wear riding-appropriate clothing and footwear, and a helmet is required for kids 16 and under unless liability is waived by a parent or guardian; anyone may wear a helmet, air vest, or other protective clothing if they feel the need. Suitable clothing includes jeans, tights, or breeches and shirt of a somewhat close fitting style; you don't want a lot of volume that could get caught on the saddle or a fence post. You will need hard soled shoes with a heel, though cowboy boots are not required that is a very good model for what we need. The stiff sole will keep you from sticking to the stirrup and the heel will keep your foot from slipping all the way through the stirrup. We will provide all the tack needed, and will help you buy items if you feel you want to have your own of anything.
Do you offer discounts for longer commitments?
We are not able to offer discounted services at this time. There are a lot of costs involved for us to offer the best learning experience for horse and rider, maintain appropriate lesson horses, and keep our facility in top shape. We promise, you won't be disappointed in your experience with JW Horsemanship & Services!
What is included in the $1000/month training price?
The monthly fee covers horse quality hay, salt, and clean water, in a large private paddock with shelter. We’ll feed additional rations provided by customer, and supplement only with veterinarian-prescribed items or products in their original packaging. Also included are lessons for you with your horse, as often as you can align your schedule with Joe's.
Do you teach western or english style riding?
We train and teach foundational skills to your horse and discipline-agnostic horsemanship to you. With the strength, balance, and skills you and your horse learn with us, you can go any direction you choose.
Does Joe Washburn still do barefoot trimming around Central Texas?
We train and teach foundational skills to your horse and discipline-agnostic horsemanship to you. With the strength, balance, and skills you and your horse learn with us, you can go any direction you choose.
Does JW Horsemanship have liability insurance?
Yes, we carry liability insurance for activities involving horse training, teaching, clinics and classes. Every person needs to sign a release form (or have a parent/guardian sign for minors) to be on our property.
